# Billing period

The billing period defines how often customers are charged: monthly, annually, or both.

When customers subscribe to a paid plan, the billing period also determines the length of their subscription commitment. If a customer updates or cancels their subscription, they’ll be [compensated in time or money](../../../../managing-customers-and-subscriptions/subscription-updates/overview) based on the remaining time in the current billing period.
